The Importance Of Diabetes Testing
The Importance of Diabetes Testing
It has become commonplace for people to have a home blood pressure machine so they can monitor the normal fluctuations in blood pressure. Now, doctors and other health care personnel are advising that their patients do the same with a home glucose monitor.
Why the buzz about glucose monitoring? Studies have proven that those people with risk factors for diabetes can greatly benefit from checking their blood glucose levels on a daily basis. This routine can cause the patient to be much more aware of what he eats or drinks, and also can motivate them to exercise. A proper diet and exercise plan goes a long way toward preventing diabetes from developing into a disease which requires daily insulin therapy.
The problem is, most people are not overly thrilled about having to prick their finger each day in order to produce a drop of blood for testing. And, while the home glucose monitors can often be purchased at a reduced rate, the test strips used in the machine are a little costly for some people.
But the cost of the testing strips is small compared to the cost of the treatment that is necessary for diabetes and the damage to the body that diabetes causes. Not too many would-be glucose monitor users realize that the complications of this disease can include
* Heart disease
* High blood pressure
* Stroke
* Blindness and other eye disorders
* Nerve damage
* Kidney damage
A tiny finger prick seems quite minor when you think about the suffering that any of the above illnesses could cause! One reason that people do not seem to want to take some responsibility for their own health seems to be sheer laziness. They do not want to change their eating habits or began to do some form of exercise each day, and it shows. Over one-third of all Americans are overweight, which in turn has led to a rise in new cases of diabetes.
If you are able to maintain blood sugar levels that are near to normal, you stand a much greater chance of never developing diabetes. If you do opt for home testing with a glucose monitor, do keep records of your readings. They will help your doctor help you to tweak your regime to insure that you stay in the best of health.
